Knowing when to change a dressing is just as important as choosing the right one. Here are five clear signs it's time for a change.
1. Strikethrough
If exudate has soaked through to the outer layer of the dressing, bacteria can enter and the wound bed is no longer protected.
2. Odor
A new or worsening odor can indicate bacterial overgrowth, even before visible signs of infection appear.
3. Dressing Has Lifted or Loosened
Once adhesive borders lift, the wound is exposed to friction and contamination.
4. Scheduled Wear Time Has Elapsed
Even if a dressing looks fine, most products have a maximum recommended wear time (often printed on the packaging) — follow manufacturer guidance.
5. Increased Pain or Redness at Wound Edges
This can signal infection risk and warrants both a dressing change and clinical reassessment.
